Katie, who had settled herself beside the huge dog, thought for a moment, a look of playful thoughtfulness on her face. "Can I lead alongside you?" she asked, looking up straight into his eyes. She had a comical grin on her face, but her eyes were serious.

She had followed them quietly, why she had followed them, she did not care to know. Her footsteps were light, as she was a small dog, and the smell of water also hit her nose. Don't need the water. She thought to herself, moving once more, away from the two dogs in front of her. Was the brute crazy? "Well, there is no such thing as being sane..Life takes odd turns." She mumbled to herself. She sighed once more, her eyes watched the dogs again.
"Whatever." She replied. "It's not like I have the power to stop you." In her head she growled. If she did have the power she would stop him. But she didn't want to die just yet.

His eyes fell then upon Katie as he appeared to be thinking, she was smaller then he, but not tiny, and brazen it appeared. ``I don't see why not, my name is Mayfair by the way.``Mayfair's head rose and he canted it hard left when the smaller dog approuched and then spoke. He did not understand it's reason for thinking... but it didn't much matter to him either, if she was not with him, she was against him, in the long run, if push came to shove, that would be the simple answer. ``Have you honestly something that much against this idea. You have no want to live a life better then this one? Are you really so pathetic?`` He asked rather bluntly looking at her.

"I live my life as a loner and that is how I plan to live." She replied. "I do not feel the need to be in a pack. At least, not yet." She glared only slightly, this was not the time to lose her grip on her emotions. To let them all out, especially on this dog would probably mean the end of her. A small sigh escaped her lips, her 'lids closed gently as she pushed everything that was trying to rush up, back down. "Though I may be pathetic, a pathetic little dog, who is not stronger nor bigger than you, I do not like to rely on others." She paused for a second, staring at Mayfair, "I am young. I am stupid. Hell, I may be killed soon. But one thing for sure, I do not need her. I do not need you. And I don't need a pack." Her voice was dead, it was at monotone. She had been a bit blunt on what had been on her mind. A sigh pushed through her lips once more and she sat, looking at the large dog.

The large male sighed slightly. She made all of the points that he was trying for. And didn't even realize it. But it was not up to him to make her stay. She would decide that for herself. He lowered his head onto his front feet. His massive maw opening in a wide yawn. ``I am sure you don't need me to preach do you and I have no intention of doing so. And as for your being pathetic, it is not because you are small, it is because you are content to stagnate, to live this life without searching for something better. Canine royalty has seen fit to tell us what we can and can not do. Seen fit to tell us that because we don't fit in to their conformist ideas we are strays that must be dealt with. I am not starting a pack, I am starting a revolution.`` All of this was spoken, but it was not spoken as if he were a preacher on the pulpit, but rather as if it were simple conversation of fact.

She looked between the big dog and the small dog. She chuckled in a sly way and stood, her injured paw swollen. But she ignored that. "Well, dog," she said, addressing the small dog. "If you ever need a 'pack' or...someone to look after you, I hope you know I'm open to take you in. I hope you won't be too arrogant to realize that in this world you may only live by killing and that you are stupid to push a war upon another dog, especially bigger than you. And I hope you realize that only one thing can help you - obedience." She paused. She began to think.
She remembered a time, as a pup, that she had been lying in a warm bed in her home. But she was restless. Her people had kept her in for the winter, but had carelessly left the dog flap open for her, as they usually locked it. She had smirked and stepped up, padding through the room. Her paws clicked on the linoleum. She slipped out the door and it clattered noisily. She had sniffed around and, unluckily, met a tough stray. She had stammered a hello, and she was rather scared as he was much bigger. She was smaller as a pup, of course. He smirked and sneered and told her that this human's garden was his, though he was a stray. He told her in a menacing growl to get out otherwise he'd hurt her. She had stood her ground, saying that she'd rather die than give in to him. He had struck with an enormous paw and long, untamed claws. She'd had hers clipped just the other day. She yelped. Then she remembered nothing.
She turned her head, feeling the skin stretch over the scar on her neck that was a memory of that moment. She just shook her head. All this took a moment to sort out in her mind, to go over. She spoke to the little dog again, hopping down lithely from the truck she had been lying on. "And I hope that when you run into a spot of danger, you do what you think you should do. ...Wait, let me rephrase that. You are stupid and have bad judgment. I can tell. So you should do what your instincts aren't screaming at you. Take heed of my words, dog." She finished with a scowl.
She looked up at Mayfair. "I am going to find a bite to eat. If I'm lucky I'll find some bit of human food. You may come if you wish." And with an inviting flick of her tail, she padded off through the junkyard.
There was but one rule to the life of strays. She hoped she had demonstrated it well for the small dog. The fact that the dog thought that needing no one on her side was stupid, impossibly so. The odds of dying here were so huge that Katie felt drawn towards having others by her side, especially Mayfair. She felt as if she were safe under his wing, and she hoped that she could do a fine job taking him under hers. She hoped that when things get tough, they would work together instead of against each other. And she hoped the small dog would come to her senses and take something into action. Katie would always be glad to take the small one in. She would always welcome her. They would have another to fight with her. Maybe she felt guilty for just thinking of the fact that they could fight and that maybe the small one was useful. But she shunted that thought to the side. It was all too skeptic to deal with. Nothing was useful in this world but your own brawn and brains. Nothing else. Brains and brawn. She would have to share this with Mayfair sometime. Who had the brains? Mayfair had the brawn, sure enough. And Katie did, too. She had muscle. Her muscles rippled under her shoulders as she walked. And she was smart, but in a combined team... She would have to think about this more. But now, she was hungry.
